Public service announcement

With back-to-school season being right around the corner, it’s important for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to be alert and recognize everyone has a role to play in traffic safety around Town.

Starting the week of Aug. 26, the Town of Milton will be activating the school zone flashing lights as a reminder for motorists before students are back to school in September.

Pedestrian crossings (PXO)

Pedestrian crossings are marked, so drivers have an increased awareness of pedestrian presence.

We encourage everyone to use pedestrian crossings when available. Some PXO’s are equipped with flashing beacons. Pedestrians are reminded to push the button to activate the flashing beacons and always ensure vehicles have stopped before crossing.

Crossing guards

Crossing guards are placed in locations around Town to temporarily stop traffic to keep children safe and allow pedestrians to cross safely. Visit our website for a full list of crossing guard locations.

School drop off zones

Some schools have drop off zones where students can be dropped off on school property from a vehicle. The purpose of these zones is to provide students a safe way to enter/exit their car. This process also reduces the traffic congestion on the roads and keeps traffic moving.

The Halton Regional Police Service’s annual back-to-school traffic safety campaign, Project Safe Start, launches on Monday, Aug. 26 and will run until Friday, Sept. 6. In addition to an increased police presence in community safety zones, this year’s education and enforcement efforts will focus on the ‘Big 3’: speeding, distracted driving, and impaired.
