Congratulations to Gail Jelley the 2018 Senior of the Year

Gail Jelley has lived in Milton for over 38 years and is an active member of the Halton Community Housing Tenant Advisory Group at Martin House. Through organized events she encourages residents to share and connect with their neighbours, promoting the health and well being of residents through social engagement. Additionally she volunteers her time to both the Martin House Welcome Wagon program and Garden Committee as well as Canadian Blood Services and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Halton. Congratulations Gail on your contributions to our community. 


Nominate a Senior of the Year

The Government of Ontario offers municipalities the opportunity to honour one outstanding senior from their community each year for their admirable contributions.

Nomination Submission Details

 The deadline for nomination submissions is closed.

Nomination Criteria

Nominees must meet all of the following criteria:

  • 65 years of age or older
  • Has made contributions to better the community in at least one of the following areas:
    • Arts/literature
    • Community service/volunteerism
    • Education
    • Environment/science
    • Fitness/recreation/sport
    • Humanitarian activities
    • Keeping history alive
  • A current resident of Milton (minimum of one year)
  • Not previously a recipient of the award

Consideration is given based on the following additional criteria:

  • Past and current contribution to the community from age 55
  • Impact of their involvement
  • Leadership roles
  • Community commitment and support

Nomination Process

Nominators must complete a nomination form and provide additional information on their nominee:

  • Two (2) pages (maximum) describing how the nominee fits the criteria and is deserving of this award

  • Three (3) letters of reference

Selection Process

Nominations will be reviewed by members of the Community Services Advisory Committee (CSAC), which is a group of volunteers comprised of 7 people, including two Milton Town Councillors and five community residents. Consideration is given based on the criteria noted earlier in this document.

 Award Presentation

The recipient will be notified by the end of May, 2018, and will be acknowledged at the June Town Council meeting to coincide with June being Seniors Month in Ontario.

The  Senior of the Year will receive:

  • Certificate of recognition from the Government of Ontario
  • Monthly Milton senior transit passes for a year
  • A pair of tickets for a performance at the FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton
  • An annual walking track pass or annual Milton Seniors' Activity Centre membership
