Path: Town Hall >Projects >Sports Centre Expansion
The Sports Centre, located at 605 Santa Maria Blvd., opened in 2003 and consists of two ice pads, gymnastics complex, banquet hall, multi-purpose room, meeting rooms, concession operation, pro shop, and administrative space. Outdoor features include beach volleyball courts and an outdoor patio adjacent to the banquet hall. The current usage of the facility includes boys’, girls’, adult and sledge hockey, figure skating, speed skating, recreational and public skating, a full range of active living and gymnasium programs and events, lacrosse, ball hockey, summer camps and trade shows.
The facility was designed from the outset to allow for future expansion. The facility is positioned at the north end of the Milton Community Park, a 100-acre parcel to be developed in stages over the next three to five years. Additional trails and transit connections are also planned for this area in the next several years.
Construction of Phase 1 of the Milton Sports Centre Expansion will get underway soon, following the awarding of the Design Build Contract to Ball Construction at a Special Council meeting Monday, January 18. This expansion is possible thanks to federal and provincial grants of approximately $13.4 million from the Building Canada Fund – Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.
The 136,000 square-foot total expansion will be divided into two phases. The first phase will include construction of two new ice pads and seating (one of which will have a seating capacity of 500 people), a double gymnasium, an elevated walking track and multi-purpose spaces. Over 9,000 hours of ice are scheduled annually, with this number to double as two more ice surfaces are added. The award is for a proposed value of $27,926,500. The funding program requires that the project must be completed by March 31, 2011.
Phase 2 of the expansion has also been awarded to Ball Construction, and will include construction of an eight-lane pool. The second phase does not qualify for funding and therefore does not need to meet the March 2011 deadline, but will be phased in as part of building the expansion. The expanded facility is planned to include leading-edge technology to maximize energy efficiency and the Town will consider the option of a geothermal heat recovery system.
The business plan and needs assessment study were presented to Milton Council on October 13, 2009:
Feedback on the programming and operation of the facility is welcome at any time.
